The Director of the SD Library, Misty Jones, attended the Friends of Kensington-Normal Heights Library board meeting on October 2nd. Her opening comment was that she would like to hear from the community as she had received numerous petitions – from you!
The board and Ms. Jones exchanged information about the KNH Library operations and how it compares to other libraries in the Library Master Plan. The size of the KNH Library is of concern as is the age of the building but there are other libraries that are struggling with roof leaks and issues with air conditioning. The overall ranking is 58% based on the condition of the roof, HVAC, painting, electrical, lighting, envelope (size), ceiling, floor, furniture, site, and sidewalk. Specifically mentioned were the electrical panel being at maximum capacity, and accessibility issues.
The latter half of the discussion was regarding the amount of land required to build a decent sized building of at least 20,000 square feet. Many ideas were discussed but the 35th and Adams site continued to be the best possible option for the foreseeable future.
Ms. Jones said she would get in touch with the city real estate office to get their feedback.
What can you do?
- Sign the petition if you have not already. Community involvement is the key driver in getting the city to take action.
- Get a friend to sign the petition.
- Check out a book (or three). The circulation numbers are good but more is better!
- Visit the library. The door count stats are reviewed every month. Just stop in and say hi!
- Attend a library event. The calendar of events is right at the front desk!
- Buy a book from the Friends of the Library shelf just inside the door. It’s only a dollar and shows support!
